Gordon Under 9 Blues – Season 2005/06 Review

The Gordon Under 9 Blues came up against some tough opposition throughout the season in a competition that was highly competitive. Despite this the boys never gave up and put in some titanic battles that resulted in the calculator being called upon a number of times. The team’s first and only win came in the second half of the season against Lane Cove, again after an epic struggle. The calculators were fully tested with the boys winning by the narrowest of margins 1 run.

The improvement in the teams skills throughout the season was terrific and I’m sure the boys will go into next season well equipped for another challenge.

The Team

Liam Burke – Liam showed evidence of the next Shane Warne with the ball while having great patience with the bat.

Tom Jenkins – Another of our up and coming spin bowlers with Stuart McGill like tendencies, made huge improvement with the bat in the second half of the season culminating in a beautiful pull-shot for 4.

Dean Finnigan – The quiet achiever of our team trying hard every week. His bowling improved greatly through the season resulting in some valuable wicket taking for the team.

Ryan Pinnell – Ryan had little experience with cricket at the start of the season but took to the game like a duck to water. He was the live wire of the team, never still, and always moving in with the bowler. Ryan shows all the characteristics of a potentially good all rounder.

Pearce Cohen – One of two pocket rockets in our team, Pearce was always bubbling with enthusiasm. Pearce also showed good all round skills with both bat and ball as well as potential as a team leader.

Jock Wilcox – After attending a “Shane Lee” coaching clinic Jock became one of the teams most consistent and accurate bowlers.

Patrick Hayes Brown – The Adam Gilchrist of the team when it came to batting, Patrick hit a number of “6’s” during the season. No point in running when you can hit boundaries!

Conor Campbell – Conor became recognized as the safest of the team behind the wicket as the only player to take a catch with the gloves on. Look out Adam Gilchrist!

Marcus Greene – Steady as a rock Marcus improved steadily with both bat and ball. In particular Marcus improved his backing up when running between wickets and as someone with plenty of speed should rack up quite a few runs over the next few seasons.

Samuel Martin – The Team’s answer to Michael Clarke Samuel was very consistent with the bat showing good vision and running between the wicket skills. Sam backed this up with a pretty handy bowling action.

Ben Harris – A bee in a bottle buzzing around the field and between wickets. Ben was notable for his ability to hit 4’s just when the team needed a boost. Bens bowling also showed a big improvement over the course of the season.

Rory Burns- Rory may not have the height of Brett Lee but he certainly could rip the ball down the wicket with both speed and accuracy.

Tom Lewis – Another who starred with the bat consistently hitting 4’s and 6’s. His speed between wickets was also very impressive.

Adrian Testa - another of the Shane Warne look-a-likes in the team showed lots of improvement during the season with the ball and plenty of potential and he should be ripping down spinners for seasons to come.

Robert Harrison – The “Andrew Symonds” like all rounder of the team, batted consistently each week and was the only bowler to achieve a hat trick. The highlight though had to be Roberts brilliant one handed (running backwards) catch against St Ives that resulted in Robert also loosing a lose tooth in the celebrations.

Stuart Martin - Coach
