Five Gordon players chosen for NSW U19 and U17 Squads
NSW U19 City squad.
The Club congratulates Matt Jones, Harry Evans and Rob Edwards, on being chosen for the NSW U19’s squad of 19 players for the 2008/09 season. It has been a just reward for the hard work and dedication shown by these members of the Gordon U21 Academy.
Matt Jones in good form at Chatswood Oval
The current season does not finish for these players as Cricket NSW subjects them to fitness tests at the end of April and end May. That is followed by weekly fitness sessions during the month of June. They then move into a 3-day camp on the 4/6th of July, plus 7 skills and fitness sessions every 3-4 days from the 9th July. There is more of the same in August with another 9 sessions on each Saturday morning and Wednesday night. One could say that you could then hopefully assume that they will be in prime condition for the 2008/09 grade season commencing in September.
Matt Jones forced his way into 1st grade in mid-Dec after averaging 57 in 2’s and performing well with the ball, despite being ill during the early part of the season. 1st grade was a real learning curve for this most talented all-rounder and he will build on this invaluable experience in the coming years.
Harry Evans made a really promising debut for Gordon 2nd grade this season. He played 13 matches and still managed to successfully complete his HSC exams. A top effort and on the way scored 326 runs at 27 and played in the PG’s side between exams. His keeping has been exceptional and in all games took 20 catches and executed 5 stumpings. He is a player of the future.
Rob Edwards at Chatswood Oval against the Hawks
Rob Edwards is another exceptionally talented all-rounder that played a major role in our past Green Shield sides. School cricket had to take precedence for this now Year 12 student and he could only manage 2 grade and 2 PG’s games this season. He was chosen for NSW Schoolboys last season and represented combined CAS in the recent Lord Taverners. Rob was also selected for a combined NSW U19 side to tour India in April. Has been monitored by emerging Blues selectors from a very early age.
NSW City U17 Provisional Squad.
We are also very proud to have Chad Soper and Tom Lamont chosen in a provisional NSW squad of 22 for the 2008-9 season. The U17 program will begin in mid June.
Chad Soper played his initial season for the Club at the ripe old age of 15, playing mainly 4th grade, 2 games in 3’s, plus the whole Green Shield season. He scored 209 runs at 26 in grade, took 15 wickets at 34 and 9 catches. It was a magnificent start for his grade career for this really gifted young all-rounder. He is something special and has the cricket brain and determination to go a long way in the game.
Chad Soper thoroughly deserves his selection
Tom Lamont thoroughly deserved his selection with an outstanding Green Shield season. He scored 375 runs at an average of 75. On the way Tom blasted a brilliant 212no in 190 minutes, off 152 balls, with 18 fours and 7 sixes It was the 2nd highest Greenies score since Ken Eastwood in 1951. We want to see him in grade as soon as possible.
The Club wishes all 5 players the best of luck in these initial steps to higher honours. The Gordon Faithful, who tasted finals’ success this year, will be keeping their eyes on these five young men and wishing them all the best in the years to come at the Gordon club.
