First Grade victors against strong Sydney University team

Semi final next week against Randwick Petersham at Chatswood.

While the scores look like a decisive victory, the Gordon victory was much closer for those at the ground as each run and each over in our second innings made the task for Uni that much harder. In the end our second innings of 150 meant Uni needed 236 off 22 overs, which became an impossible task as early wickets fell going for every delivery and they game was called off with Uni 6 for 57 after 10 overs.

The second day started with Uni needing 17 runs to avoid the follow on and put them in a position of throwing everything at our bats and setting up a possible run chase. Their day didn’t start well with a fantastic catch by Reece Bombas on the backward square leg boundary after Ed Cowan hit a full blooded pull shot that was taken inches from the ground to his left.

This was the fifth wicket for Matt Nicholson and brought Greg Matthews to the wicket. A couple of slog sweeps over cow corner from the veteran off Beau Casson saw them pass the follow on score and when Beau took the final wicket LBW, Gordon had a lead of 86 runs.

The next target was to get to lunch with minimal damage and the bats succeeded to do this with the score at 1 for 54 with the loss of Craig Simmons.

Keeper Iain Beverley in his part time role of opener had seen off the first spell of Stuart Clark and Reece Bombas was showing the same resolve as he had in the first innings.

Unfortunately wickets started to fall after lunch and it was left to Iain Beverley and Matt Nicholson to show the way during the middle session. Although Iain only scored 23 he batted for 38 overs and through two spells of the opening bowlers and by keeping the overs ticking over was playing Uni out of the game.

Nicho showed all his experience with a very secure 50 not out to go with his 25 not out in the first innings and after Gordon was dismissed Uni set about trying to get a flying start to their mammoth run chase.

The wickets fell as can happen in this situation and the offer of Greg Mail to finish the game at 6 for 57 was aaccpted by Matt. Dylan Connell bowled with good line in his spell and collected 4 wickets during the run chase.

All in all a good win against a strong team who went into the match as favourites, however ran into a very hungry team with a point to prove.

After the wins by Randwick Petersham and Easts this now puts Gordon into 2nd place on the ladder and a home match next weekend against Randwick Petersham.

Come down to Chatswood next weekend and see some great cricket.

Scores

Gordon, 209 (Craig Simmons 113, Reece Bombas 38, Matt Nicholson 25 not out) and 150 (Matt Nicholson 50no, Iain Beverley 23, Craig Simmons 19 defeated

Fourth Grade

After working so hard on the Saturday to bowl out Randwick Petersham on a very good wicket, the task proved too much for the 4th graders against the No. 1 team after they were bowled out for 106 in reply.

Guy Hicks scored 30 however no one was able to get a partnership going.

Congratulations to the 4ths and their captain Iqbal Ahmed for a fine season and we look forward to the seeing many of their players in the higher grades next year.

Scores

Randwick-Petersham 280 (James Campbell 4-28, Chad Soper 3-63, Adam Cubbage 2-51) and 2 for 71 defeated
