First and fourth grade make the semi finals.

1st grade finish 4th and will play Sydney University next weekend.

(Matt Nicholson during his 4 for 12 off 10 overs on Saturday)

The first grade team played at their best on Saturday to dominate the Manly team and register a double bonus point to push them into 4th place on the ladder. The result means they will match wits next week against a strong Sydney University team that may include Stuart Clark, Stuart Macgill, Mark Cameron and Greg Matthews. Gordon will be strengthened further with Beau Casson returning after the Pura Cup final to join Matt Nicholson as our current representative players.

The 4ths had a very solid win at Killara and have finished in 6th place and will play Randwick Petersham who have finished on top and are undefeated.

Seconds unfortunately lost their match at Chatswood and have finished 7th . This was a disappointing result after being in the running for the last 6 weeks.

Overall we have finished 6th in the Club Championship which is a satisfactory result in a 20 club competition and augurs well for the future.

(Matt Jones who took the vital wicket of Sullivan)

First Grade

Manly Oval offered some early life to the Gordon bowlers as they strived to win a game which might put them into the semis.  Matt Nicholson was aggressive from the outset and took early wickets to put the Seasiders on the back foot.  The early batsmen struggled and, with Dylan Connell also chipping in, Gordon were on top.  No partnerships of any consequence took place and the consistent fall of wickets meant Manly falling for 135 - a very satisfactory result for the Stags.  It was now a matter of scoring the runs, hopefully with a bonus point.

Craig Simmons however, decided that two bonus points would be better and ensure that Gordon would be playing next week.  He started attacking from ball one and decimated the Manly bowling as well as terrorising anyone who lived within a couple of hundred metres of the ground (and the drivers on Sydney Rd)!  He was dismissed in the eighth over for 49 with the score on 68 and the Stags were well on the way.

Reece Bombas continued the onslaught with a stylish 20 and Rod Hokin also smashed a couple of majors to take Gordon to the total.  Brad Rasool completed the win with a big six and the Stags had won, with two bonus points, and had made their way into fourth spot on the table.  A fantastic result!!

Scores

Gordon 3-139 (Craig Simmons 49, Rod Hokin 37*, Reece Bombas 20) defeated

Manly 135 (Matt Nicholson 4-12 off 10 overs, Dylan Connell 2-40) with two bonus points.

Second Grade

The seconds decided to bat after winning the toss and while the wicket had a covering of grass didn’t expect the movement they would encounter and before long they were 3 for 3 and in all sorts of trouble. A recovery then started with Elliot Richtor and Nick Dowsley taking the score into the 70’s. WE couldn’t keep the momentum going however and after we lost these two we could only scrap together 119, which was going to be very hard to defend as the wicket had now dried out fully.

The bowlers tried hard and didn’t get the breaks with some tough decisions and Manly got the runs with the loss of only one wicket.

(Top scorer in 2's Elliot Richtor during his innings)

Scores

Gordon 119 (Elliot Richtor 47, Nick Dowsley 34) were defeated by

Manly 1 for 120 (Jack Ritchie 1 for 15)

Third Grade

While not in the hunt for the semis, thirds had a lot of pride to play for after being washed out on 5 occasions during the season and feeling they should have been higher up the ladder.

With the score at 5 for 66 however the team needed to do something special to get things back on track. A 92 run partnership between Nick Medcalf (56) and Brett Marvell (31) was the catalyst to produce a defendable score and when Ed Howitt was able to pick up some late over runs a score of 9 for 190 was posted.

The bowlers had to be on target as the Manly side were themselves in the running for a semi spot and would be difficult to dislodge on their home turf.

What turned out to be the difference was in fact the fielding as the players threw themselves at everything and took some excellent catches. A couple of run out also helped the cause and with Shenal Siriwardhane, Steve Colley and Ed Howitt picking up wickets they were able to bowl out Manly for 161.

(Ed Howitt and Dan Lake leave the field after posting 9 for 190)

Scores

Gordon 9 for 190 (Nick Medcalf 56, Brett Marvell 31, Steve Colley 28, Ed Howitt 23 not out) defeated Manly 161 (Shenal Siriwardhane 3 for 42, Steve Colley 2 for 17, Ed Howitt 2 for 20)

Fourth Grade

Gordon were in the field first in their must-win game at Killara.  The two teams were playing for the Mal Hall Memorial Trophy and the wicket offered a little life and the pacemen bowled good lines.  Wickets didn't come easily but the run rate was low.  At 2-112 from 33 overs, there was the possibility that the Stags might be chasing a solid score.  However, from there, wickets began to fall more regularly.

For Gordon, James Campbell again bowled well while Iqbal Ahmed and Chad Soper supported effectively and Pat Effeney and Adam Cubbage took important wickets.  Manly were dismissed for 198 and the equation was simple - get the runs and there was a semi final waiting next week.

(Guy Hicks during his 76 not out)

The early Manly bowling was loose and early runs came quickly.  Unfortunately Gordon also lost their two openers. At 2-25, things were a bit shaky.  However Adam Cubbage and Guy Hicks got together and batted very aggressively.  Guy started to really punish the bowling and then Adam found his range and also hit numerous boundaries.  In no time they had added over a hundred and the game had swung sharply in Gordon's favour.  The third wicket fell at 147 when Adam was dismissed but there was no let-up as Harry Turner batted most confidently from his first ball.  The last 52 were added rapidly with Guy clearly having an appointment at about 4.30pm.  He finished unbeaten on an excellent 76*.  The total had been passed in the 29th over, and the Stags get to experience finals cricket.

After 9 years the Trophy still remains with Gordon (Mal is definitely watching)

Well done, guys!  Enjoy!

Scores

Gordon 3-199 (Guy Hicks 76*, Adam Cubbage 62, Harry Turner 21*) defeated

Manly 198 (James Campbell 3-21, Iqbal Ahmed 2-33, Pat Effeney 2-33, Adam Cubbage 2-62, Chad Soper 1-37 all off 10 overs) with one bonus point.

(Adam Cubbage shows his style during his 62 at Killara)

Fifth Grade

The fifth grade side were greeted with their largest crowd for their season, however unfortunately they weren’t there to watch them play but rather to congratulate Manly legend Mike Pawley on the official opening of the Mike Pawley Oval at Curl Curl. After speeches from the dignatories, and with Mike bowling the first ball on the ground in a match, they were able to get down to business. They found that the going would be tough with former NSW player Shawn Bradstreet playing the match in honour of the occasion.

Manly batted very well making 6 for 228 on a slow outfield with Will McKeith and Matt Selby each taking 2 wickets.

The Gordon reply was however disappointing and Manly were able to record a win on their first day at the new ground. Gordon were bowled out for 94 with Tim Creed scoring 21.

Scores

Manly 6 for 228 (Will McKeith 2 for 45, Matt Selby 2 for 49) defeated

Gordon 94 (Tim Creed 21)

Colts

There are no scores in from Colts, however we believe they were beaten by Sydney University.
