Matt Nicholson announces retirement from SpeedBlitz Blues
SpeedBlitz Blues, former Australian Test fast bowler and Gordon captain Matt Nicholson will play his final match for NSW in the Pura Cup match against South Australia starting at the SCG tomorrow (Friday).
The 33 year old Nicholson will bring the curtain down on an illustrious career that also included a Test appearance for Australia.
In his sole Test Match, Matt took 4 wickets against England at the MCG in 1998, with a best of 3-56. He was considered unlucky not to have played more times for his Country.
In his 114 First Class games to date, Matt has taken 393 wickets at an average of 28.87 and scored 2800 runs at 22.04 including 3 centuries.
‘It’s the right time to finish with the SpeedBlitz Blues’ Matt said ‘I have loved playing cricket here and I will take some tremendous memories with me’.
Matt will continue to play for English County Club Surrey during the coming winter but is not sure of his plans past that.
‘I would love to stay involved with the game, perhaps as a fast bowling coach or in a player mentor role,’ he said.
‘I want to thank Cricket NSW and all the players and fans for their support over the years. It has been an honour to represent the SpeedBlitz Blues’.
Cricket NSW Chief Executive David Gilbert paid tribute to Nicholson.
‘Matt has been an outstanding performer for the SpeedBlitz Blues since joining us in 2003. His total professionalism to the game, whether in training or playing, has been a shining example to his team-mates. We wish him the very best in his future endeavours.’ |
