Passing of Norm O'Neill
It was with great sadness that we heard the news today of the passing of Norm O’Neill aged 71. While Norm played all of his cricket south of the harbour, our club knew him well through his son Mark, who played for many years at Gordon while not playing for NSW and in later years has provided expert coaching to our Academy members. Mark is now the New Zealand batting coach based in Auckland.
Norm was one of the best cricketers to ever wear the baggy green and played 42 tests with a batting average of 45.55 scoring 2779 runs. He was also a better than average spin bowler who was often used as a surprise wicket taker during his career and a magnificent fieldsman who had a bullet arm not unlike the Australian fielders of today.
All of the club look forward to catching up with Mark soon to pass on our best wishes as we know his Dad was a major influence in both his playing and coaching career.
Norm will be greatly missed and we send our sincere condolences to all of the O’Neill family for their loss.
