What about Beau?
Australia’s next champion spin bowler to replace Shane Warne…the experts have spoken. It will be Stuart MacGill, or maybe Brad Hogg, or maybe Bryce McGain, or maybe Dan Cullen or maybe Cameron White or maybe….
It seems no one remembers who was preferred by the WA selectors as their Pura Cup spinner only a couple of years ago ahead of Brad Hogg and who took six wickets against the Waugh brothers at the SCG.
It also seems no one remembers a player who is only 25 and has as many spin variations as Adam Gilchrist has sore fingers... Yes I am referring to Beau Casson.
Beau joined the Gordon club last season and slowly made his presence felt with dedicated training, and an overall cricket sense that was inspiring to all his teammates and opponents. He worked very hard to get used to the Sydney wickets and with this dedication also came a lot of runs in his role as a middle order batsman as well as a series of excellent spells against some of the best grade bats in the business.
A shoulder injury diving to save a boundary in the lead up to the finals last season meant a difficult period as drink waiter for Beau in the Pura Cup, however after some off season corrective surgery he was ready to go for this year.
While bowling very well at grade level, the opportunities didn’t come for Beau for the Blues as he had hoped but as we have come to know from him that only meant more hard work.
During his time at Gordon Beau has also been available whenever free from NSW duties to help coaching the young spinners in the club via the Academy and this has been greatly appreciated.
While the NSW team played a draw against Victoria last week, there were some bowling figures in the Victorian second innings that I am sure will turn the heads of our experts and maybe make them re look at their list of “maybes”.
Beau Casson: Five wickets for 97 off 38.2 overs with 11 maidens on top of 2 wickets in the first innings.
Congratulations Beau from all of your team mates at Gordon on your first 5 wicket haul for NSW. We certainly know your worth and we hope others do as well.
