GDCC 20/20 - Game 1

The GDCC 20/20 finally kicked off on Tuesday, after a few weeks of inclement weather.  Even still, a crash on the F3 prevented some of the lads from the Central Coast from playing.

Jack "The Slug" Ritchie eyeing off the short Chatswood boundary

The first match of the tournament saw Rocket’s Rebels (Rod Hokin's side) take on Stiffler’s Stooges (Brendan McDonald's side). The Stooges batted first, with our young Pommy friend Alex Griffith getting the side off to a good start, with a well compiled 41 at the top of the innings. Wickets fell fairly regularly as the batsmen tried to up the run rate, with only Harry Evans standing solid finishing unbeaten on 56. The Stooges amassing 9 for 188.

The Rebels innings started solidly, without losing a wicket in the first 5 overs. However the required run rate was creeping up and eventually wickets started to tumble with Blair Lindsay picking up 3 and Dan Lake 4. Both players also took 2 catches in the innings. Jack ‘The Slug” Ritchie was the best of the Rebel’s batsmen, dishing out punishment over the short square leg boundary, taking 19 off one particular over. (Note: this boundary was only short on the leg side for left hander’s, the club coach and competition organiser is also left handed, not sure if there is some form of bias here considering that all the overs were bowled from the nursing home end so right handed batsmen had to hit towards the considerably longer boundary on the leg side).

The Rebels kept fighting, but when the “Slug” was clean bowled eyeing off the short boundary one more time, the run rate had crept above 10 runs an over which proved too much for the remaining Rebels batsmen. They finished 9 for 158, giving victory to the Stooges.

It was good to see players from all grades participating, and despite a smattering of first graders in each side, it was some of the clubs younger players who were the stand out performers.

There were also a number of players not involved who came down to watch and partake in the BBQ after the game.

Next week, weather permitting Stiffler’s Stooges take on Dazzler's Demons (Brad Rasool's side) in Game 2.

NEWSFLASH: The weather has not permitted this game to go ahead. It has been postponed another week.
