NSW Schoolboys go down in nail biting finish

Rob, Nick, Steve and Harry play important roles (in that order in picture below)

The NSW Schoolboys lost their one day match against Queensland Schools in a dramatic match at the SCG on Thursday.

Firstly what a great experience for the Gordon players to play at the SCG in a representative match and to get the feeling for a ground we hope they will be playing on again as they pursue their cricket careers.

I will go to the last over first.

Queensland are 9 wickets down needing one run to equal the NSW score off the last over. A catch unfortunately had been missed in the second last over. NSW had scored 8 for 188 off 45 overs in a shortened game due to the rain.

The bowler was of course Rob Edwards. First ball a run and the scores are level. Rob then proceeded to bowl 4 dot balls under extreme pressure. (All those training sessions bowling a good line and length come to the fore).

The last ball, a squeeze for two runs and Queensland are the winners.

(Knox connection- Rob Edwards and Harry Evans with the "grand master" of Knox Cricket, Tony Gifford*)

In the NSW innings our boys contributed very well with Steve Colley scoring a bright 55, Harry Evans 35, Rob Edwards 13 and Nick Cheadle finished off the innings with 35 not out.

In the bowling both Rob Edwards and Nick Cheadle finished with two wickets each in the absorbing run chase.

In the 3 day match previously reported the last day was restricted to a few hours only with the weather, however Harry Evans was able to score a welll made 66 against the strong Queensland attack.

All in all, the experience will be great for the players and will give them the confidence to show their grade opponents the skills they possess.

We should also congratulate the Academy coaches this season, Steve Smith (head coach), Beau Casson and Craig Simmons for their consistent work on technique and committment.

The Webmaster

*A small piece of trivia, Tony was the manager of the 1969 Australian Schoolboys tour of the West Indies which included Bob Thomas and the Webmaster
