Two thrillers but no Christmas presents for the Stags
First and Second Grade were the only two games to be played due to the wet weather. Both were absolute nail-biters but, unfortunately, Sydney got the better of both matches. Harry Evans’ ton plus a great five for by Scott O’Brien were the highlights of the First Grade game while Nick Miller scored a great century along with Matt Wright’s 61 in Seconds to almost get them home.
Over the week - Gordon 3-178 (Steve Colley 84, Harry Evans 80*) vs Sydney
A bit of moisture around saw the game start an hour late and 107 overs to play. Harry moved on to another excellent century and Lachlan Barnsley scored a handy 26. Elliot Richtor then moved things along with a brisk half century and the innings was declared at 9-324.
Sydney started well and, despite losing a wicket at 33, got themselves into a strong position, moving to 183 without further loss. Then, both set batsmen were dismissed to get the Stags back in the game. Another partnership but then Scott O’Brien ripped through the middle order and Gordon were right back in it. The ninth wicket fell with 24 to win but some good hitting got Sydney home.
Great fightback from the Stags and Scott but we go into the Christmas break with plenty to think about while we enjoy our lunch!
Gordon 9dec 324 (Harry Evans 109, Steve Colley 84, Elliot Richtor 50, Lachlan Barnsley 26) lost to Sydney 9-325 (Scott O’Brien 5-90, Alex Patterson 2-73) on the first innings.
Over the week - Sydney 2-229 vs Gordon
Sydney were obviously going to try and get more runs on the board quickly to have a good shot at rolling Gordon. Will Calov and Ryan Meppem both took a wicket immediately. Then Will, in a terrific spell, continued to cut a swathe through the Sydney middle order, taking another four. Matt Wright took the ninth and Sydney declared at 9-302, leaving Gordon 103 overs to score the runs. Will finished with a fantastic 5-69 from his 18 overs.
Unfortunately, Gordon did not start well. Early wickets saw them slump to 3-28. Dom Thomson and Josh Staines then took the score to 63 before the former was dismissed. Josh and Nick Miller then shared a handy partnership of 81 but when Josh was out it looked a forlorn hope. However, Nick was batting exceptionally and Matt Wright proved an excellent ally. Despite suffering from cramps, Nick batted on to a fantastic century. Just when it looked like the two of them would see it home, Nick was out for 111 – a great dig.
Matt continued on to a really impressive 61 but, at his dismissal, things became really tough. Unfortunately, the last couple of batsmen couldn’t bring it home and Gordon fell 17 runs short.
A sad ending but a great fighting effort from Nick and Matt.
