Social Committee home

The Social Club are back this year with some fresh new faces, but even if some of those fresh new looks are bearded, they are still here to support the social side of our club - strongly backed by the Orchard Hotel.

Deciding to expand the membership to 3 this year, Lachie Stewart, Scott O'Brien and Anand Verma are taking on organising the Social scene. They are also being ably assisted by Dan Stickland, Tym Crawford and Aaron Crofts who make up the player committee.

We are extremely grateful to have the Orchard back on board this year and are also excited to be running the inaugural Gordon Social League. With a combined total of over $2000 worth of prizes up for grabs it is definitely a great year to be a social legend.

As you see below there are loads of planned events - with more details coming to hand shortly. It is important that all club members make an effort to support these events. They will be loads of fun!!

Most importantly, the Gordon District Cricket Club Social League is here! Check out the article below, which explains the league. At the end of the season, we will be crowning one team as the inaugural GDCC Social League Champions, with some particularly useful and awesome prizes!

  • Post training barbeques
  • Poker night - 12 Nov (@ The Orchard)
  • Twenty20 Day - 4 Dec (@ Chatswood Oval)
  • Xmas party - 17 Dec (@ The Orchard)
  • Charity Golf day - 16 Feb (@ Killara Golf Club)
  • End of Season Party - 11 Mar (@ The Orchard)
  • Awards Night - 29 April (@ Kirribilli Club)
  • Player of the month held at the Orchard on selected dates - $150 for the winner who must be present.

And one more thing, if you want to help out in organising any events, or have ideas about things you would like to see in your Social Club, let us know!! Please!

Gordon Social League - Update #3 - 2016/17

Gordon Social League - Update #3 - 2016/17

What's better for a clubman than sitting atop the Club Championship? Sitting atop the Club Championship while wearing free gear.

In its first season, the social league can be seen as a huge success. I say this because while it is hard to scratch together 4 bowlers for a net at training, the Orchard, Crowie and grassy surrounds of our PGs fixtures are overflowing with Stags.

Like all socialists, we despise individuals and feel more comfortable when labelled as a group in society. However huge thanks go to Scotty O'Brien for his diligent efforts in keeping the database up to date.

The Socialists, in collaboration with Beastwear and the Gordon DCC, have this year offered something for the punters to play for. Our first offering is a $50 voucher for players on the team with the most points at the start of Round 6.

Leading at Round 5 is like being 2/100. You're not as safe as you think. So if you find yourself chasing the leaders through till the next lot of prizes at Christmas, don't be an anti-social jerk about it.

You can't alpha your way to the top of this table. Go be social and take your team to the top!

Just before you get the information you came here to get and stop reading, the next prize is $100 for your team to spend at the Christmas party.

Whether its Jaeger, lightly sparkling mineral water or a good ole' schnitty, enjoy your dinner on the Social Committee.

Now, to the winner... The Darkside on 580 points, followed closely by Team Mantos and The Turpsmen.

Congratulations to the Darkside! I'm sure like Martin Luther King Jr, they too had a dream.

We also recently had our 2016/17 Gordon District Cricket Club World series of Poker. A huge thank you to Peter Percival from the National Poker League for doing us a very special deal on his service, to Anand Verma for organising the night and to Scott O'Brien for overseeing the night.

Congratulations to Jono 'MIA' New for taking it out over Scotty 'Good for a 50' O'Brien and Darren 'Jayasuriya' Jayasekera. Big thanks to Tym Crawford, Nick Prell and Cris De Krester for helping set the night up.

The short version:
• Next Prizes: $100 voucher for the winning team to be spent at the Christmas Party.
• The Darkside wins the $50 Beastwear vouchers.
• Jono New takes out the 2016-17 GDCCWSP (The Gordon District Cricket Club World Series of Poker.)
• Acknowledgements:
o Anand for organising the Poker night.
o Scott for working tirelessly to keep the database up to date and overseeing the running of the poker night.
o Peter Percival for the National Poker League for running the night and charging the club a very generous amount for his services.
o The Gordon DCC committee for supporting us in securing our venue.

Gordon Social League - Update #2 - 2016/17

Gordon Social League - Update #2 - 2016/17

Another 2 rounds have passed since our last update and the Stags see themselves on top of the table in 1st grade, undefeated in almost every grade, and on top of the club championship! There have been some excellent and consistent performances on the pitch, but who is exhibiting excellence and consistency off the pitch?

A huge round 3 against the Bumblebees saw many Stags in a celebratory mood, the result of 25 players back at The Orchard after Day 2 meant the social points have been flowing thick and fast. A bit of rainy weather and the start of PG’s and T20 competitions have also provided some extra opportunities to rack up some points by helping with covers or supporting the boys.

Taking a look at the standings, we have Team Mantos and Team Stobes tied for first on 400 points apiece. Team Mantos has been showing some very good consistency to continue to lead the way. Each of the team’s members has registered points to date with their inspirational leader, James ‘Mantos’ Kennedy (100 points), leading by example. Imagine the bonuses he could have been racking up if geography hadn’t been getting the way of him cashing in on the Bae Bonus!

Two hands or one Stags? Courtesy of Sweet Chilli Philly Willy

Team Stobes has also put in a solid group effort to move into the joint lead, with each team member also registering points. Sons of Pitches (formerly Team Smear) have dropped slightly in the standings to third place, but will be in for some bonus points by the end of round 5 as they have given themselves a team nickname. Bonuses will also be heading the way of The Darkside (formerly Team Pest), The Turpsmen (formerly Team Dools) and The Silly Duffers which should significantly tighten the top of the leaderboard.

An honourable mention must go to Team Crane who are starting to show some social form after a nightmare start to the season. Until ‘Willie’ Mason Crane arrived in Round 3, they were a directionless rabble that seemed destined for the wooden spoon. However, the team’s fortunes seemed to have turned and full credit must go to our young Pom for getting around the Stags and collecting himself 60 points in the 2 rounds he’s been here. It’s also fair to say that they would be in all sorts of trouble without the contributions of Charlie ‘Points Machine’ Booth (110 points). This man is putting together a very impressive social season and looks to be a force to be reckoned with as the league rolls on.

Stags at the races!? Mason, Tym and Ash say yes.

Individually, Nick Prell (The Darkside) leads the way with 150 points. Prelly has been a consistent supporter of teams other than his own and is becoming a part of the furniture at the Orchard on a Saturday evening. He may end up a runaway leader if his luck picks up on Tinder throughout the season and he can start adding some Bae Bonuses. Showing that there truly is more than one way to skin a cat, we see Ash ‘Patches’ Doolan and Adam ‘Cabbage’ Cubbage in equal second on 120 points. Patches has so far built his campaign on solid foundation of supporting the Stags by day, and giving them the antlers at The Orchard (and Crowie) by night. Cabbage on the other hand, like seasons past, has been an absolute covers fiend. He has also been cleaning up with the Bae Bonuses, with the increased quality of dinner options at The Orchard helping him convince Bae to let him spend even more of his Saturday with his summer friends. Behind them, only 10 points separate 4th and 11th on the table with 6 players tied on 100 points.

At the other end of the ladder, there are 24 players who are yet to register a social point. We’re not going to name and shame them here; we’ll be saving that for the Facebook page and of course in person on a Saturday. However, with the social calendar laid out and some good opportunities to register big points coming up, we’ll be looking forward to seeing these players getting off the mark soon.

REMINDER: Each member of the team leading at the end of Round 5 will be receiving a $50 Beastwear voucher. So if you want to fulfil the number 1 goal of a grade cricketer; to look good, make sure you and your teammates get along to the Poker Night, keep those team names coming through and keep the social points flowing.

Announcing the GDCC Social Program for 2016/17 - Save these dates!

With 6 social events planned for the remainder of the 2016/17 season, the Stags are set-up to have an outstanding season on and off the field.

We have a Poker Night, a Xmas Party and an End of Regular Season party planned.

We also have a massive day planned for the Twenty20 matches scheduled at Chatswood Oval. This will be a Sydney Sixers fan day and should be a fantastic event.

It all kicks off very soon with the Poker Night at The Orchard on the 12th of November. So please make a note of the event dates and do your best to get along and support the club.

Along with attending these events, you can support the club by getting to The Orchard each and every Saturday night after games to have a feed and catch up with fellow players and supporters.

Gordon Social League - Update #1 - 2016/17

Gordon Social League - Update #1 - 2016/17

With 11 from 12 wins the Stags are off to a blistering start on the park but how about off the park? After two rounds, 30 points separate the top 5 teams in the inaugural Gordon Social League.

Every point counts because after Round 5, each member from the team at the top of the ladder will receive a $50 voucher to spend in the Beastwear store! It might be a singlet to get the guns out or a long sleeve training shirt to conceal your 19 degree elbow bend in the nets. Whatever your need (perhaps some skins Harry?), free gear tastes pretty good!

BONUS POINTS: We will also be judging the team with the best nicknames at the end of round 5. Nicknames are a great way to build camaraderie and the team with the best nicknames will be awarded a bonus 20 points! While some nicknames (like "Silly Duffer") will write themselves, others will need to be creative. Higher graders might actually be forced to socialise with lower graders to come up with a good nickname. "Champ" is not an acceptable entry.

On to the honourable mentions. There have been some stand out performers. Shayne Lin and Adam Cubbage are the strongest contributors, taking full advantage of the "Bae" bonus to have earned 80 points for their respective teams. Other honorable mentions go to Ash Doolan (70), David Burke (70) and Cam Eccles (70) who have used a combination of partners and serious after match drinking to make up the majority of their total. The ultimate clubmen so far are Dermott Beattie who has done covers 3 times already and John O'Neill Fuller who earned 10 points for umpiring a Colts game!

While the ex Mosman brigade has accumulated a grand total of 280 points, a dishonourable mentions go to Adam Wasyluk who despite being touted as a social legend has contributed 0 to his team thus far! Another who cannot be allowed to fly under the radar any longer is loved up opener Liam "Silly Duffer" McElduff who has not used the girlfriend bonus once so far! Being seen on social media won't get you any Social League points, get down to the Orchard!

The leaderboard looks like:
1. Team Smear – 230 points
2. Team Mantos – 230 points
3. Team Pest – 220 Points
4. The Silly Duffers – 210 Points
5. Team Stobes – 200 Points

GDCC Social League

GDCC Social League

As eagerly awaited as team selections for Round 1 and the results of Cam New’s “Best Dip for Afternoon Tea” poll combined, the Gordon District Cricket Club Social League is here!

Players have been organised into teams and as a team, you can earn Social Points throughout the season. At the end of the season, we will be crowning one team as the inaugural GDCC Social League Champions!

Points will be awarded for all sorts of things, including:

  • attending club events (e.g. Season Launch, Xmas Party, T20 Day);
  • volunteering to help out at club events;
  • getting to the Orchard after game days;
  • helping out with covers;
  • bringing a bae (partner), friend or relative to a club event or Orchard after games, and;
  • basically anything that could be considered as “Getting Around the Stags”

There will also be bonus points awarded for original and funny nicknames for teams and individuals, as well as bonuses for teams able to get all of their members to attend a club event or back to the Orchard on game days.

What’s in it for you? Well apart from being known around the club as a Social Legend, at the end of the season there will be some particularly useful and awesome prizes!

  • 1st Prize: Free tickets for the whole team to the gala event of the Season, the GDCC Awards Night!
  • 2nd Prize: Specialist coaching sessions with one of the greatest coaches in all of cricket, Mark ‘Sparky’ O’Neill.
  • 3rd Prize: A $100 bar tab for the final round of the season at the Orchard.

On top of these prizes we will be handing out 7 x $50 Beastwear vouchers to the leading team at 2 different points throughout the season, and the team leading at the New Year break will receive a $100 bar tab at the Orchard for our Xmas Party!

So get around the Stags and start increasing your social stock!

Kind regards,

The GDCC Socialists

Fantasy League 2015/16 - Final results

Fantasy League 2015/16 - Final results

As the glow of the inaugural awards night continues to shine on the 'summer friendships', the Fantasy League has wrapped up for 2015/16. And with it comes the ultimate victory for Tony Wilson's "Tiddles Ultimates".

It should come as no surprise that the winning side should feature the top 3 players from the Hickman & Ritchard "Player of the Year" votes - Stewart, Krishna and Stobo (3, 2, 1 respectively). In addition, Monaghan, O'Brien and Klemt, the 5th, 3rd and 2nd Grade players of the year, made it impossible to beat Tiddles' side. A strong last half of the year, with Sherman, Rice, Ferrero, Richtor and Crawford also featuring strongly in the side saw one of the most comprehensive victories in the many seasons the league has been running.

Talking about the Player of the Year - it is interesting the see that the players' votes correlated pretty highly with the aggregate runs - although Rahul was the most valuable players in 2015/16... and Lachie Stewart's mercurial mid-year saw a high tally for this future star.

It's time to check out where your side finished... and your players. Who owes you a beer for their performances... and who do you owe a beer?

Well that's it from me for 2015/16 - someone else will be running the competition next year. So please put your hand up to help out.

Fantasy League 2015/16 - Quarter Finals

Fantasy League 2015/16 - Quarter Finals

It would be difficult, and wrong, to disagree that our club has a recent history of strong performances in the lower grades. Whilst it has been around 25 years since a 1st Grade premiership, the lower grades have often represented the club well into the finals series and have often taken home silverware.

This is the prenultimate update for the Fantasy League, as we all know that this year 5th Grade's charge was extinguished in the semi finals, while Colts were cruelly thwarted by the rain.

Who has lots of 5th Grades and Colts? Who is making a late charge? WIth the knockout competition completed, all attention is back on the full competition, which will run until all points from the finals are included.

Quarter Final results are now published. Check out the current points table below in the aggregate competition and the individual player performances.

Good luck!

Gordon Fantasy League Management

Fantasy League 2015/16 - Round 15

Fantasy League 2015/16 - Round 15

It's a wrap... and ironically it's the closest knockout final in the history of our Fantasy League. There was just 4 points in it... but was it Tony Wilson's Ultimates or the Stuyvos that took home the prize.

In the full competition, which will run until all points from the finals are included, the jostling for the top spots continues, with Howitt's bubble burst and back on the downwards spiral, to be replaced by Adam Cubbage's side.

At the other end of the spectrum, the broader Howitt clan is appearing frequently in the bottom 10. Can they claw themselves out of there in the final rounds?

Round 15 results are now published, including the knockout competition's final result.

Check out the current points table below in the aggregate competition and the individual player performances.

Good luck!

Fantasy League 2015/16 - Round 14

Fantasy League 2015/16 - Round 14

Well... that's it. It's all over. The final of the knockout competition will see Tony Wilson playing with himself. Do we even need coverage of the final round?

However, it might have been different for Ed Howitt Jnr, who was tossed from top spot by the new leader and ejected from the knockout competition in the same manner, if a couple of the captains had completed their full teamsheets on myCricket.

Missing catches and other statistics mean that some of Round 14's results are missing... despite it being a month after the round has finished.

Last time we posed the question whether Tym Crawford could turn his performance around? It appears not. And with Will Smith and Lachie Borg in his team... there will be no points in Round 15 from either of those two. However, anyone that has Dan Smith in their side would be laughing... leading the points tally after the transfer window!

Round 14 results are now published, including the knockout competition's Semi Final results.

Check out the current points table below in the aggregate competition and the individual player performances. As well as the results of the knock-out competition and the Round 15 match ups.

Good luck!
