Lloyd Wilson Tribute to Dick Guy
I lobbed at Chatswood Oval for pre-season practice at the 1967-68 cricket season. Had not played for Gordon before. In fact had not played anywhere the season prior. After the usual three practices before the comp, Dick came up to me at final practice and said, “you`re in First Grade next week”. I couldn`t believe it, was hoping for 3rds or maybe 2nds. Quickly settled in as an opener with Ken Oates (Charlie Chuckles), and with Dick bowling like a champion we finished 4th in the comp, after 12th the season before.
That season Dick took 71 wickets, and won The Daily Telegraph award ($500), and Gordon won the club award (another $500). Typically, Dick spent his prize on a team party with families.
Dick`s family and my family soon became close. We went on two family cruises together (1973 and 1975 on the Fairstar). Geoff Steward (Stewpot) and family came on the first. Dick`s favourite drink on the ship was Brandy Alexander (good training for those colours nights at the Gordon Rugby Club later).
We had some wonderful weekends away with families - Harrington, Toowoon Bay, to name just a couple. Dick also spoke fondly at two of our daughters’ weddings.
