A tough Day 1 against the Students
It was another good weekend for the Stags against Manly with convincing wins in Firsts and Fifths, while Fourths won a nail-biter. Thirds lost and Seconds and Colts couldnt get on rain-affected wickets. Friday night's rain spiced up a few wickets arounds the place althougth most were OK. Regardless of the decks, it was always going to be a difficult round against the powerful Sydney University club who are clearly leading the Club Championship with three rounds to go.
And so it is proving with most teams in a real struggle for points after Day 1. Firsts fought hard on a day when the momentum swung a number of times. Seconds got off to a good start but let things slip. Thirds are already behind on the first innings. Fourths and Fifths need good first sessions next week. The Colts (playing Mosman) have a good total to defend.
1st Grade at Chatswood
It was a really good arm wrestle at Chatswood. Uni won the toss and batted. They were in early trouble at 3-53 (two to Glenn Winsor and one to Tym Crawford) before a good partnership took them to 128. They then lost three quick wickets and a fourth a little later and Gordon were well on top at 7-161.
The next two batsmen proved very hard to dislodge, adding another 122 before Charlie Stobo was able to break the partnership. Another 30 odd runs at the end meant that 316 what Gordon will be chasing next week. A couple of dropped catches proved costly but 316 is certainly an achievable score next week.Glenn Winsor was the pick of the bowlers with another strong effort, while the other bowlers had mixed fortunes.
Gordon vs Sydney University 316 (Glenn Winsor 4-35, Scott O’Brien 2-54).
2nd Grade at Syd Uni 1
2nds won the toss and batted at Uni. Dom Thomson and Ryan Tullia shared an excellent opening partnership of 80, with the former playing a top knock of 60. Lachlan Barnsley then added a further 42 with Ryan and, at 1-122, things were looking very good against the competition leaders. Unfortunately, things went awry after this. Lachlan was dismissed and then Ryan for a patient 47 and the innings fell away. Jared Clulow scored 22 but the rest of the batsmen struggled, finally being dismissed for 196 with Matt Wright remaining not out on 12. Disappointing after such a good start. The Gordon bowlers tried hard and had Uni 2-35. The next two batsmen stayed firm and at stumps the score was 2-72.
Early wickets a priority next week.
Gordon 196 (Dom Thomson 60, Ryan Tullia 47, Jared Clulow 22, Lachlan Barnsley 22) vs Syd Uni 2-72.
3rd Grade at Killara
Gordon won the toss and batted at Killara. Alas, not very well. All out for 60 was disappointing, with no-one really making any headway against a strong attack.
4th Grade at St. Pauls
Gordon lost the toss and bowled. Danusha Seneviratne took two early wickets to put Gordon on top. Simon Read then chipped in with another three before a handy partnership took the score to 5-90. Dylan Hood struck just before tea and, after the break, Manus Chauhan ran through the lower order to finish with an impressive 4-15. Uni were all out for 128 – a top effort from the Stags.
In reply, Gordon lost a wicket immediately before Mitch Kleem and Tom Hamblin shared a good 41 run partnership. Just when it looked like Gordon might be sitting very comfortably at stumps, three quick wickets were lost and 4-63 at the end of play means a tight first hour or so next week.
Gordon 4-63 (Tom Hamblin 29*, Mitch Kleem 21) vs Syd Uni 128 (Manus Chauhan 4-15, Simon Read 3-29, Danusha Seneviratne 2-25).
5th Grade at Castlecove
After a late start, due to some moisture that had got under the covers, Gordon batted first. It was hard work with a very slow outfield. The Stags slumped to 5-41 off 31 overs and an absolute disaster looked possible. However, some good dogged innings from Ben Callinan first and then skipper Dave Monaghan (again!) got the score up to a modest 116. Worth a lot more with the outfield as it is.
In reply, Uni were 1-24 and again, the first hour next week will be vital.
Gordon 116 (Dave Monaghan 37, Ben Callinan 21) vs Syd Uni 1-24.
Colts vs Mosman at Balmoral
The Colts batted first at Balmoral. After an early wicket, Lachie Donaldson and Nick Astridge shared a strong partnership. Nick was first out for an excellent 45 while Lachie went on to an impressive 53. Wickets began to fall and the Colts fell to 7-162 before Nathan Sequeira mounted a terrific rear guard action to go on and score a half century and take Gordon to 226.
Gordon 226 (Lachie Donaldson 53, Nathan Sequeira 52, Nick Astridge 45) vs Mosman 0-10.
