Gordon Cricket Academy

The Gordon District Cricket Club is now offering its coaching services to all cricketers. After over a decade of providing coaching to the high performance squads at the club, we are providing this highest level of coaching to everyone.

We have contracted our Head Coach, Mark O’Neill, to allow us to utilise his widely acclaimed batting and spin bowling coaching techniques for all sessions or programs set up by the new Academy.

To achieve this Mark has licensed his techniques to the Academy and has set up an accreditation program where each of our Academy coaches are accredited by Mark to teach his techniques to our own Tier 1, 2 and 3 levels. Mark is the personal coach today of several Australian Test cricketers and his experience includes being contracted batting coach to New Zealand, Middlesex, Western Australia, New South Wales and as a high performance squad coach to Cricket Australia.

In addition, our First Grade opening bowler and Academy Administrator James Kennedy is our head fast bowling coach responsible for accrediting our specialist Tier 1 and 2 fast bowling coaches. James is a Certified Level 2 Cricket Australia Coach and qualified PDHPE teacher, while on the field has represented NSW Second XI level and been contracted with the Sydney Thunder Big Bash squad.

Our ex-first grade wicket keeper Iain Beverley is also available on the coaching panel for expert wicket keeping technique sessions. Based on various availabilities the new Academy now has 25 qualified coaches contracted to deliver the range of Academy services.

As an additional value added service, the Academy have contracted two qualified personal trainers who are both current or former Gordon cricketers who will be available to provide personal strength and conditioning sessions for individuals or groups.

Gordon Cricket Academy goes public

Gordon Cricket Academy goes public

In a major development for the club after 12 years of providing coaching to various high performance squads with the Gordon District Cricket Club (GDCC), the club is now making the same coaching services available to all cricketers.

Mark O’Neill  Head Coach

To ensure the highest level of coaching is available to all cricketers, the GDCC have contracted our Head Coach Mark O’Neill to allow us to utilise his widely acclaimed batting and spin bowling coaching techniques for all sessions or programs set up by the new Academy.

The philosophy of Mark’s batting technique in particular has always been that the skills taught to the junior cricketer should be the same as taught to a Test Cricketer. The concepts of grip, balance and execution in batting should be same and while natural ability and capability to adapt will always differ, the Academy Tier 1, 2 or 3 level coaches can provide you with the skills background irrespective of your age and existing abilities. Mark has also added his vast knowledge of spin bowling to the accreditation system to enable our spinning coaches.

Our first grade wicket keeper Iain Beverley is also available on the coaching panel for expert wicket keeping technique sessions.

Based on various availabilities the new Academy now has 25 qualified coaches contracted to deliver the range of Academy services.

The services range from an hour session with a nominated coach at a venue of your choice either as an individual or in a group of two or more players at the session. The Academy pricing is geared to make the coaching cheaper by grouping players but still giving them a high level of individual coverage by them watching and listening to their fellow players as they are coached.

In addition the Academy will configure a team coaching service and group skills sessions for higher numbers of players. Specific fielding sessions with a qualified fielding coach and holiday camps are also being planned for the next available holidays.

Fitness training

As an additional value added service, the Academy have contracted two qualified personal trainers who are both current or former Gordon cricketers who will be available to provide personal strength and conditioning sessions for individuals or groups. The techniques used by these trainers have been established as specific techniques for developing each type of cricketer with different methods for batsman, fast bowlers, spinners and keepers.

The Academy will use the Mt. Kuring-gai Action Indoor centre as our base indoor facility, however our coaches are happy to work outdoor or at other centres that are closer to the player or group of players. Very importantly this also includes the central coast where we have established arrangements with several indoor centres.

The Academy coaches, list of services, pricing, bookings, contacts and payment  are described within the various sub-sections of this site.

Added service (video)

As a value added service for Academy sessions. For each individual or small group one hour indoor sessions, the Academy coach will record the session via a specific purpose video camera. Players will be asked to bring along a memory stick to take home the recording. The Academy also has play back screens that will be used to show players the result of the recording to better explain any improvements or show where improvements have been gained.

The goals of the Academy are to provide all of its clients irrespective of their age, level of cricket or budget, a qualified coach that can assist them to become better cricketers through fitness, technique, attitude and skill development.

GCA Coaching Staff

GCA Coaching Staff

While Cricket Australia now provides coaching certifications to level 1, 2 and 3, the Academy while recognising these qualifications believes it can accredit its coaches to a higher level internally through the direct involvement of Mark O’Neill and James Kennedy to accredit them to our own Tier 1, 2 and 3 levels.  due to their experience in advising cricketers, Mark and James are our Tier 3 coaches and naturally are marketed at a higher rate for their services.

Our Tier 2 coaches are accredited to that level by Mark or James after they have shown their coaching skills either though experience or through their individual performance within the Accreditation sessions. Coaches can also be raised to our Tier 2 level through Mark or James' quality monitoring of their videoed sessions.

Our Tier 1 coaches are ranked higher within our Academy than Cricket Australia Level 1 coaches due to their understanding of the various techniques held by the Academy under licence with our head coaches.

Instruction received by our Tier 1 coaches in particularly for junior cricketers gives them the basics of the essential tools for taking them to a higher level. Once they have achieved an understanding of our techniques they do not need to change them as they grow into higher level cricketers. They simply need to be refreshed to ensure old habits don’t resume sometimes forced on them by situations in the games they are involved in and good intentioned advice from non-qualified coaches.

The Academy is in the unprecedented position of having coaches who have represented Australia, NSW, NSW 2nds and Gordon First Grade.

Academy coaching services and fees

Academy coaching services and fees

The Academy coaching services can be adapted to suit the requirements of the player or players. Due to the vast range of expertise within our coaching group, coaches with particular skills can be allocated to a session, particularly when there are different types of players with multiple skills.

Importantly  the Academy specialist bowling or wicket keeping coaches are all required to be accredited to the Academy batting technique program so batting is not lost on bowlers who bat in lower order.

The cost per player reduces when a group of 2 or more is arranged for the session. The Academy coaches recommend a minimum of two players.

To pay for your confirmed session, please follow this link to chose the appropriate session and enter your details.

The rates below are per player increase on the basis of the accreditation level of the coach.

Gordon Cricket Performance Squads

Gordon Cricket Performance Squads

The Gordon Cricket Academy (“The Academy”) was established back in 2000 as an operating entity wholly within the Gordon District Cricket Club, with the following mission statement to guide its cricketing aims:

“The Academy’s aim is to focus on the development of Junior Players (Under 21) from within the Gordon district and beyond in order to maximize their potential development and performances in relation to cricket as well as assisting in their overall personal development.”

Academy squads remain the same

While the Academy has now expanded into providing service beyond the cricketers within the Gordon District Cricket Club, we are still operating the same “Performance Squads” within our structure as we have in the past. The main difference is that these squads are formed through “invitation only” by the Academy committee and the costs of coaching services are either subsidised (Junior and Under 19 Development squads) or are made available free of charge (Under 21 High Performance Squad and Green Shield Squad).

How the performance squads operate

The performance squads are spilt into 4 divisions, the Junior Development Squad, the Green Shield Squad, the Under 19 Development Squad and the Under 21 High Performance Squad.

The reason for having four divisions is to recognise that the commitments to School and different stages of personal development require a different approach to the management of each member’s cricketing ability.

Membership into these squads is based on invitation only from the Academy Management Committee. Players invited may be current members of our club or players identified as future club members. These may be players who are not in a position to play for the club at the present time due to their age, their school commitments or where they live (country etc.)

The four academy divisions are described as follows:

Junior Development Squad

This division is made up of players between 12-13 years of age who have displayed a high level of skill within their school, club or representative cricket and can be assisted further with high level coaching. This squad is designed to form the basis of our future Green Shield squad and is intended to allow them to access a level of coaching they have not experienced to date in their short careers.

The squad will have access to high level coaches including our current club coach Ed Howitt in a specifically designed program over a 5 week period during the winter months. The program will set them up to develop their skills and be ready for the demands of Green Shield cricket as they hone their cricketing skills and their mental capacity to manage them effectively.

Green Shield Squad

This squad is made up of players who have been selected in the official Green Shield Squad to play within the SCA A.W. Green Shield Competition representing the Gordon District Cricket Club. The squad will also have access to high level coaches in a specifically designed program over a 4 month period from the start of the pre-season to the completion of the Green Shield matches. The program will not only include the development of their individual skill sets but also the broader strategies of cricket matches and how to contribute to a team environment.

This squad will have net, fielding and communication sessions from October through to the end of January.

Under 19 Development Squad

The Under 19 Division is made up mostly of players who have played in the club’s Green Shield team and their priority is now their school sport and studies.

While School is obviously a priority it is our goal to keep these players within the Gordon “family” and provide high level skills training through specific sessions including a weekend session, matches against School and University teams  and importantly through an invitation to join the Club’s training sessions on Tuesday’s and a session with the 1st Grade squad. They will also have access to sessions that include  communications, team building, fitness and nutrition. While many of the Academies programs are free of charge through our sponsorship, a fee to cover costs only is agreed with this squad prior to starting.

Every opportunity is also made for these players to attend Grade Training sessions when time permits with their school responsibilities. We want these Academy members to feel they are part of the club.

Under 21 High Performance Division

The Under 21 division consists of invited players whom the committee believe have the potential at this stage of their development to become Gordon First grade players or higher. Invitation to become an Under 21 Academy member is on a season by season basis and can be reviewed at any time if the player’s attitude or performance does not meet the standards of the Academy.

To date the Academy has produced some 30 players who have played first grade for the club and 5 who have progressed to NSW 2nd XI level.

The Under 21 Squad has full access to the Club’s coaching staff and high level sessions  with coaches for all disciplines are organised throughout the pre-season and early season up to the selection of the Poidevin Gray teams. The Squad will also have access to our head coaches for “one on one” sessions during the year.  Members of the Under 21 Squad are generally existing club grade players, however the Committee may from time to time include a younger player who shows exceptional skills.

Other aspects of the Academy

Coaching

The performance squads in 2014-15 have access to the Tier 2 and tier 3 levels coaches where each player receives an individually tailored program designed to concentrate and accelerate their cricket education and will be judged on performance and potential, the latter being assessed in the five core areas of technical, tactical, physical, mental, and lifestyle capabilities of playing at the highest level. Performances will be judged in the context of their attitude and participation in the team environment and not solely on weight of runs, wickets taken, or dismissals achieved.

Alliance with Macquarie University

The Club has an established alliance with Macquarie University and based on various academic and cricket capabilities, members of the Academy are chosen for Scholarships at the University. The Alliance has provided many scholarships over the length of its association with the Academy and plans to extend these in the years to come.

Matches

The Academy also plays matches against School teams and combined grade teams. This enables the Academy coaches to analyse the skills of the players in match conditions, particularly when an Academy member does not play grade for the club at this stage.

This season we plan to play Academy matches against the Shore School, other Green Shield teams prior to the competition starting, as well as inter Academy matches.

Sponsorship

The Academy has operated over the last 12 years through the generous sponsorship of Peter Horwitz from The Horwitz Group. Peter is a former Gordon First Grade cricketer and long term supporter of the Club and the Green Shield team. Peter is actively involved within the Academy committee and his assistance each season is greatly appreciated. Peter is also a Cricket Australia Level 3 Coach.

Schedule

The schedule of sessions and games is adjusted each year to suit the requirements of the members and the club. Sessions are designed to supplement other activities of the member, and due to these commitments attendance at each session is not mandatory.

The games are played during school holidays or on a weekend when available and we use the Gordon First grade ground when available or the various school grounds.

Session times and venues are distributed to the individual squad members.
